The Great Gatsby: A Designer’s Perspective

Perhaps you’ve read the 1925 novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald.  The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby, his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan and lavish parties on Long Island. Without a doubt, one of the greats in twentieth-century literature.  (If you haven’t, add to your kindle ASAP!)
This year, Warner Brothers is turning the classic into a film…Luhrmann-style.  If you have ever seen his adaptation of Romeo & Juliet or Moulin Rouge, you know you are in for an explosion of images meant to take your breath away.  Jazz-age costumes, re-invented swing music (mixed by Jay-Z, no less) and the illustrious Carey Mulligan?  Oh my!
I had the privilege of attending The Great Gatsby Preview Party.  It was a small, 20’s style cocktail event at The Century Guild with only about 40 people in attendance. Among the few, however, were writer/producer/director Baz Luhrmann and his wife as well as brilliant (and Academy Award©-winning) set/costume designer to the film, Catherine Martin (!).  The night was a kick-off to Martin’s exhibition that will be held in the gallery until June 1st.  Lavish in her exquisitely drawings and  absolutely stunning costumes, this is the perfect preview for the film itself.

The Prada store in Soho is also celebrating the movie. They have a handful of costumes on display in their store and windows overlooking Broadway.  A must-see for those in the area!

The film comes out TOMORROW, May 10th (as if you didn’t already know).  Peep the trailer and get inspired before the big day!  Oh, and did we mention it’s staring Leo?  We did say “must-see” for a reason.
