With a new virtual costume exhibit from the Brooklyn Museum (we’ll include a link at the end of this article!), one can’t ignore the fabulosity of Netflix’s Golden Globe nominated show The Queen’s Gambit. The 1960’s period piece feels exciting and modern with coming-of-age themes and the exhilarating wins and losses of a child prodigy breaking her way into the competitive world of chess. We’re drawing some serious wardrobe inspiration from notoriously chic female-lead Beth Harmon’s outfits throughout the show. Check out the nine outfit ideas we’ll be riffing off of for our wardrobes below!
Vintage Patterns in Modern Pieces
Bring back windowpane and check in a wool coat or blazer for a modern homage to this classic pattern.
Contrasting Colors
We love the dramatic contrast of black and white or camel and black!!
Layering Dresses
We love this layering inspo on ways to wear button ups with dresses! For a modern approach, try this layering technique with a slip dress!
Off-Duty Sweaters and Cardigans
The off-duty sweaters and cardigans of Queen’s Gambit read oversized-yet-tailored. We love this look with a straight leg skinny jean or leggings!
Quirky Collars
Use a unique collar as your statement with a peter pan collar or pussybow!
Details in the hair
Statement hair calls for an accessory to match. Try a head scarf or knit beanie to pair with soft curls!!!
All in White
Monochrome head-to-toe creams and whites are perfect for winter!
Check out our post on Teddy Bear Jackets for more ways to layer monochrome neutrals.
Statement Coats
Stand out in the crowd with a coat in eye-catching yet easy to wear colors like maroon, pale blue or neutral pink.

Belted Coats
Belt your coat for a figure-flattering way to layer your outfit! Check out our post, Waist Belts for more inspo.
