A few weeks ago, my man (check out his blog post on the event) and I attended a packed night of fashion and costume at FIDM’s Red Carpet Trends & 22nd Art of Motion Picture Costume Design Exhibition. With some bubbles in hand we watched Nick Verreos present a capsule collection of red carpet gowns. We were so fortunate to sit front row enabling us to see the dedicated handiwork that went into each piece.
Greecian piece with beautiful back beading design.
Loved this piece. The allover encrusted beadwork was F A B U L O U S!
Lemon yellow with beaded strapping and a deep plunging back. Stunning.
The Great Gatsby & Anna Karenina:
After the show we then walked through to the costume exhibit which I have to say was amazing. The fact that you can walk right up to each costume with no plexiglass, no crazy line to enter the building, no crazy packed galleries (channeling the MET”S past costume exhibits) makes this event a total pleasure. The exhibit featured costumes from the past year as well as featured 5 Oscar Nominees for Best Costume.
Star Trek : Into the Darkness. This group of costumes was stunning between the quality of the fabrics/leather details and the textural contrasts. Sigh…
American Hustle: Love, Love, Love. This designer had so much fun with the time period. Many a deep plunging neckline in this segment.
My most favorite part of this show was the incredible paper hair. Up-do’s, down and flowing, and period piece chignons. This work was over the top creative. I applaud whomever developed and executed the concept. The paperwork added such depth to the exhibition, brought a minimal modern contrast to many of the ornate costumes. Bravo!!!
Pacific Rim: Super cool robot warrior suits.
Man of Steel: Total technology with the fabrics, construction and
bonding.
The best part of the FIDM costume exhibitions is that they are free! So whatever your budget there is no reason not to take a trip to DTLA and check out these amazing pieces designed and constructed by many talented hands.
